The Brainiac guys really make their point here, even though they faked their explosions. The real reactions can be seen below – it just isn’t as entertaining. Despite the lies, the truth is that all Alkali Metals react with water producing hydrogen gas. Lithium isn’t exothermic enough to catch on fire, but the others are and as you go down the group they react more aggressively. This chemical property, the way that they react with water, is one of the main reasons these elements were grouped together as Group I of the periodic table.
